Sugar Blocker is a herbal complex formulated to neutralise dietary effects of sugar and help to suppress sugar cravings and consumption. It contains 3 main ingredients, in its layman terms: Bitter Gourd, Gurmar and Mulberry extract. These 3 ingredients each have its potent benefits and work together to give the best results.
Momordica charantia (Bitter Gourd)
Bitter Gourd is rich in hypoglycaemic compound, which lowers sugar levels in blood. The fruit contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including charantin, which has been confirmed to have a blood glucose-lowering effect, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels. It is also known that bitter gourd contains a lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations by acting on peripheral tissues and suppressing appetite – similar to the effects of insulin in the brain. This lectin is thought to be a major factor behind the hypoglycaemic effect that develops after eating bitter gourd.
Gymnema sylvestre (Gurmar)
Popularly known as Gurmar (sugar destroyer in Hindi), it is a woody climbing shrub that’s native to the tropical forests of India, Africa and Australia. Its leaves have been used in the ancient Indian medicinal practice, Ayurveda, for thousands of years. It has been a traditional remedy for various ailments, including diabetes, malaria and snakebites. It contains gymnemic acid, which suppresses appetite for sweet food and reduces the intestinal absorption of the sugar glucose. Gymnema sylvestre appears to contribute to favorable insulin levels by increasing insulin production and regenerating insulin-secreting islet cells in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. These activities of Gymnema sylvestre can help lower blood sugar levels. However, if you’re taking blood-sugar-lowering medications, consult with your doctor first.
There are some chemicals in mulberry that work in a similar way to some medicines used for type 2 diabetes. This chemical (specifically an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor) works as a “sugar blocker”. They slow the breakdown of sugars in the gut so that they are absorbed more slowly into the blood. This helps the body keep blood sugar levels in the desirable range. And thus have a lowering effect on postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels.
